A great place to start is in town. Take a stroll through the streets of Carrick on Shannon and discover art installations including our ‘literary wall’, you’ll find the brass foot prints that lead you to the Famine Workhouse and Costello’s Chapel which is central to some light hearted dispute as to whether this tiny chapel is actually the smallest or second smallest chapel in the world. You’ll also find the canopy covered market yard, home to a weekly Farmer’s Market (Thursdays) and where spontaneous live music sessions often happen and close by, the former court house – The Dock, now home to our arts centre and home to the Leitrim Design House.
As you stroll along Main Street, you’ll discover the colourful quirky garden hidden behind The Bush Hotel and the mosaic covered shop front of Geraghty’s Shop, with its large window crammed with musical instruments and curiosities. There is so much to see and find as you stroll along the new streetscape of Carrick on Shannon.
Carrick on Shannon is found on the banks of the River Shannon with a riverside walk and parkland. You can stroll along the Marina and watch the cruisers as they come and go, take time out in the People’s Park found behind Ireland’s oldest rowing club or sit and there’s flora and fauna galore and riverside seating to sit and rest awhile as you take in life on along and on the river. There’s a fairy garden for the little ones, a mini community library, wind chimes over the water and a wonderful boardwalk perched high over the Shannon that brings you right into the flow of the Shannon.
